MP Bruce Stanton Joins Volunteers on Hike

MP Bruce Stanton joined volunteers of The Couchiching Conservancy on a hike through Grant’s Woods to discuss the importance of land conservation in the Couchiching-Severn Region.

“Once you get out into nature, suddenly you become very aware of the importance of protecting these special natural places,” said Grant Mask, volunteer for The Couchiching Conservancy.

In 2016, the federal government introduced Canada’s Pathway to Target 1, committing to reach a goal of protecting 17% of land and inland waters by 2020.

In 2016-2017, The Couchiching Conservancy introduced the 17% Pledge to Protect Nature. By August of 2017, over 2,000 individuals signed the pledge indicating their support for the efforts of local land trusts and recognizing that they play a vital role in helping Canada reach their 17% goal. Identifying over 2,000 unique supporters in a little over a year was a good indication that conservation is a priority for people in the Couchiching-Severn Region.
